Normal Levels of Serum Lipids and The Ratio of Lipoprotein Fractions in Albino Rats

Abstract
In order to determine the levels of total serum lipid, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, phospholipid, nonesterified fatty acid and lipoprotein fractions in healthy rats, 35 rats, weighing from 195g to 255g were fed a standard diet consisting 12%, 18% and 70% of energy from fat, protein and carbohydrate respectively, with adequatevolum of vitamins and minerals. The serum collected at 6 hours after fasting was used to determine the
concentration of lipids and the ratio of lipoprotein fractions, in serum and the following results were obtained; the level of total serum lipid was 288¡¾38mg/dl; triacylglycerol, 49¡¾8mg/dl; total cholesterol 79¡¾7mg/dl; total phospholipid, 102¡¾10mg/dl; nonesterified fatty acid, 0.56¡¾0.15mEq/L(14¡¾4mg/dl: as palmitic acid); and the ratio of alpha-lipoprotein to beta-lipoprotein, 72¡¾7% : 28¡¾7%.
